The Sainte-Marie hospital in Nice is specialized in the treatment of mental health disorders. In line with the architecture the landscaping project’s objective is to provide the patients, the medical staff and the caregivers with secured, functional, qualitative and accessible spaces, where they will be able to find comfort and distraction. The project also serves the therapeutic process by alleviating the suffering and the stress and by offering activities. Finally, it will help improve the environmental quality of the site and therefore the quality of life inside the unit.

The various psychological disorders treated in this centre requires the creation of equally diverse spaces. To meet the organisational requirements of the different units several landscaped areas of various shapes have been suggested: gardens, patios, terraces and green rooftops. The central garden is used as a transitional space between the hospital and the public space. While ensuring the security of its users, it adds a touch of lightness, freedom and normality within the hospital centre and facilitates sharing and encounters. Patios are private and intimate spaces. Each one is related to a specific care unit. Their design is tailored to the patients, they are intended for.

Particular attention has been given to the water and the selection of plants. Water is used as a landscape pattern aimed at improving wellness, as an entertaining tool working towards psychomotor development, and as a resource with the rainwater. The variety of plants have been chosen to ensure consistency, security, diversity, seasonality and a positive impact on biodiversity.
